Play the Middlegame in Chess Like a Grandmaster – GM Damian Lemos

Normally, the middlegame in chess is what defines the outcome of the game, where deeply understanding the tactical and strategic themes is more important than ever.

The middlegame in chess is the most difficult phase of the game for beginner chess players because it is a constant transition, maximum tension, and a time of combining immediate tactical needs with long-term positional ideas.

Most middlegames contain nearly all pieces still on the board, and the friction between opponents inevitably creates conflict, requiring complete attention to avoid forcing combinations.

In this series, GM Damian Lemos analyzes various examples to teach viewers about a different way of thinking … a different approach to the middlegame in chess that will make you a superior player.

GM Lemos illustrates his ideas by presenting numerous games from legendary players like Vishy Anand, Jose Raul Capablanca, and Wilhelm Steinitz, thoroughly demonstrating certain principles in the middlegame that are guaranteed to help you improve your game and your results.

GM Lemos analyzes a game between Vishy Anand and Victor Korchnoi in order to illustrate how grandmasters make decisions on what moves they should play, based on concepts such as keeping the initiative, winning a tempo, or not allowing the opponent to develop harmoniously.

Play against your opponent’s bad pieces

GM Lemos takes a look at a game between Kupchik and the legendary Jose Raul Capablanca. In this game, he shows you how the former world champion bases his middlegame plans on playing against his opponent’s bad bishop since the bishop is trapped behind his own pawn chain.

An aggressive attack against the opponent’s king

GM Lemos takes a look at a game played by Grandmaster Emil Sutovsky and Grandmaster Loek Van Wely. In this game, you’ll discover how to start an attack against a castled king using your own kingside pawns, which were initially protecting your king.

This course will surely help you improve your understanding of the middlegame in chess.
